Compare Old Frisian gāstlikhēd , Middle Low German geistlīcheit , gēstlīchēt , Middle Dutch geestelijcheit (Dutch geestelijkheid ), Middle High German geistlīcheit (German Geistlichkeit ), all originally with reference to (religious) spirituality and piety (now usually used to denote the clergy collectively). Compare earlier ghostliness n.Compare also the rare related formation Middle English goostlihode , goostlihod ( < ghostly adj. + -hood suffix), found only in the works of R. Pecock, and earliest in the following passage:c1443 R. Pecock Reule of Crysten Religioun (1927) 287 Þey schulen now be rehercid..goostlihode, fleischlihode, worldlihode, clennes, honeste, pacience, douȝtynes and largynes.
