Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman geomancy, Middle French geomancie (end of the 13th cent. in Old French; French géomancie ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin geomantia (a636 in Isidore; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < geo- geo- comb. form + -mantia -mancy comb. form. Compare Old Occitan geomancia, geumancia, Catalan geomància (1575; 1302 as †geomencia), Spanish geomancia (late 14th cent.), Portuguese geomancia (15th cent.), Italian geomanzia (a1311), also German Geomantie (c1400, earliest (and in early use frequently) in Latinate form geomancia). In sense 2 frequently used to translate Chinese fēng shui feng shui n., which is morphologically unrelated. The β. forms, which appear to be unparalleled in other words ending in -mancy and also in French, probably show loss of the postvocalic nasal. In γ. forms directly < post-classical Latin geomantia.
