单词 glim
释义

glimn.

Brit. /ɡlɪm/, U.S. /ɡlɪm/
Forms: Also Middle English glymme.
Etymology: Ultimately < the weak-grade of the Germanic root *glῑm- , glaim- (see gleam n.); but the history is obscure. Possibly the word in sense 2 may be a modification of glims glimpse n., and in sense 3 a shortening of glimmer n.1, its earlier synonym. It is not certain that the noun existed in Old English or Old Norse, though some of the continental Germanic languages have a word of coincident form and meaning: compare Middle High German glim (modern German glimm) masculine, spark, Swedish dialect glim flash, Dutch (obsolete), Flemish glim, also glimp, glow, glance, passing appearance.
1. ? Brightness. Obsolete. rare.So commonly explained on etymological grounds; the context by itself would rather suggest ‘delight’.
