Etymology: < the name of William Gilbert (?1544–1603), English physician and natural philosopher (compare quot. 1891).
Physics. Now chiefly historical.
The unit of magnetomotive force in the cgs electromagnetic system, equal to the magnetomotive force resulting from the passage of ¼π abamperes through one turn of a coil. Symbol Gb.The equivalent SI unit is the ampere-turn; 1 gilbert is equivalent to 10/4π (approx. 0.796) ampere-turns.
