单词 gilbertian
释义

Gilbertianadj.

Brit. /ɡɪlˈbəːtɪən/, /ɡɪlˈbəːʃn/, U.S. /ɡɪlˈbərdiən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Gilbert , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of William Schwenck Gilbert (1836–1911), librettist of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas + -ian suffix.
Of or relating to W. S. Gilbert or his work; esp. resembling or characteristic of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. The librettist, playwright, and poet William Schwenck Gilbert is chiefly known for his collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan between 1871 and 1896, during which they produced numerous comic operas including H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1875), and The Mikado (1885). His libretti (and many of his other works) are characterized by witty rhymes, elements of parody and satire, and narratives in which a whimsical premise is carried to an absurd but logical conclusion.
