Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abastardir.
Etymology: < Middle French abastardir (French abâtardir ) to debase, make degenerate (c1170 in Old French with reference to a family line), to declare illegitimate (1549) < a- a- prefix5 + bastard bastard n. Compare post-classical Latin abastardare (1199, 1202 in British sources). Compare also slightly later abastardize v.
Obsolete.
