Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French abatable ; abate v.1, -able suffix.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman abatable, abatabill abatable, subject to being overthrown (c1292) < abatre abate v.1 + -able -able suffix, or directly < abate v.1 + -able suffix.
Chiefly Law.
That may be abated; liable to be abated (in various senses of abate v.1).
