gimmern.2

Brit. /ˈɡɪmə/, U.S. /ˈɡɪmər/, Scottish English /ˈɡɪmər/
Forms: Middle English gymbyre, gymbure, gymmer, 1500s gymmar, gylmyr, gimer, 1500s– gimmer.
Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse gymbr.
Etymology: < Old Norse gymbr a ewe lamb one year old (modern Icelandic gimbur, Danish gimmer-lam); compare gymbell he-lamb. Ulterior connections unknown; the vowel of the Old Norse word seems to forbid the supposition of some etymologists, that it contains some form of the Indogermanic word *gheim- (ghjem-, ghim- etc.) winter, and is thus cognate with Greek χίμαρος (masculine), χίμαιρα (feminine), goat one year old.
Scottish and northern dialect.
1. A ewe between the first and second shearing. gelt gimmer, a barren ewe.
ΘΚΠ
