Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin globularia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin globularia (1597 or earlier: see quot. 1597) < classical Latin globulus globule n. + -āria -ary suffix1; compare post-classical Latin globularis globular adj. Later adopted into scientific Latin as the genus name Globularia.
A plant of the Eurasian and North African genus Globularia (family Plantaginaceae), which comprises low growing herbs with pink, purple, or white flowers held on long stems above the leaves, commonly grown in gardens for ornament; cf. globe-daisy n. at globe n. Compounds 2. Also (in form Globularia): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 95.
