单词 glaiks
释义

glaiksn.

Forms: 1600s glaxe (Scottish), 1800s– glaiks, 1800s– glakes, 1900s– glacks (Irish English (northern)), 1900s– glaikes (Irish English (northern)).
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Irish and Scottish Gaelic combined with an English element. Etymons: Irish glac, Scottish Gaelic glac; English -s.
Etymology: Apparently < Irish glac half-open hand, grasp, handful, fork, and Scottish Gaelic glac hollow of the hand, grasp, handful, span between thumb and middle finger, prong, fork (Early Irish glac , denoting the half-open hand with the thumb opposed, and (by extension) the grasp and various things that are forked or that are grasped; further etymology unknown); with English plural ending -s, perhaps because the handles of the mechanism are typically paired. Compare glack n.Quot. 1638 is probably not an example of this word, but of a plural form of glaik n. (compare glaik n. 3).
Scottish (? Obsolete) and Anglo-Irish.
(See quot. 1880; but the sense in the other passages is doubtful; quot. 1638 may belong to glaik n. 3.)
