Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman gyngyve, Anglo-Norman and Middle French gingive, often in plural (c1270 as gengive , or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin gingīva (often in plural), of unknown origin; with the suffix compare salīva saliva n.Compare (with dissimilation of the second consonant) Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French gencive, often in plural (11th cent. in Rashi as jencive). Compare also Old Occitan gengiva, Catalan geniva (14th cent.), Spanish encía (mid 13th cent.), Portuguese gengiva (15th cent.), Italian gengiva (13th cent. as gengia). Inflection. In plural form gingivae after the Latin plural form. Attestation of the Latin word in English contexts. The layer of dense connective tissue and mucous membrane that covers the alveolar process of a jawbone and surrounds the neck of each tooth; tissue of this nature; the part of this tissue surrounding a single tooth; = gum n.1 2a. Frequently in plural.
