Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin gingivalis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin gingivalis (1592 or earlier) < classical Latin gingīva gum (see gingiva n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French gingival (1702 or earlier).

1. Phonetics. Of a speech sound: produced by placing the tongue against or near the gum behind the upper teeth; = alveolar adj. 1b. Also: designating this position of the tongue. Now rare.
