Origin: Of uncertain origin. Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: gin n.1, -our suffix; French gineor, engineor.
Etymology: Either < gin n.1 + -our suffix, or perhaps < Anglo-Norman gineor military engineer (mid 13th cent. or earlier in an isolated attestation; also as ginur (probably) in sense ‘planner, instigator’ (14th cent. or earlier in an isolated attestation)), variant (with reduction and loss of the prefix) of engineor engineer n. Compare also the α. forms at engineer n.Earliest recorded in a surname (compare quot. ?1265, which could alternatively show the Anglo-Norman word). Compare also earlier use as a surname: Alexander Ginnur (a1230).
Obsolete.
A stonemason, a builder. Also: a person who operates siege engines (cf. engineer n. 1b).
