Compare French gitain Egyptian (1661), gaytano Romani person from Spain (1784), gitan , gitano Romani person from Spain (19th cent.), Portuguese gitano Romani person (18th cent.), all < Spanish. In plural form gitani probably after Spanish Romani gitani (feminine noun) Romani people, Romani language, with reinterpretation of the collective noun as a plural (apparently after -i , masculine plural ending in Italian and Latin); compare Zincalo n.
A Romani man or boy from Spain (esp. Andalusia); a male Spanish Gypsy. Cf. gitana n.
