Forms: α. Old English glæsen, Middle English glesen, Middle English–1600s glasen, Middle English–1500s glasyn(e, (Middle English glasun, 1500s glasin(g, glason), 1600s– glazen. β. Middle English–1500s glassin, (1500s glassyn), 1500s–1600s, 1800s dialect glassen.
Etymology: Old English glæsen , < glæs glass n.1 + -en suffix4; Old High German had glesîn < *glasîno- , but the absence of umlaut in the Old English word shows that it was a new formation or refashioned after the noun. The β. forms represent a second new formation in the 15th cent.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈglassen.
