The name given to any of various coastal regions where gold is or was found or traded, esp. on the west coast of Africa; spec. a former name (until 1957) for the country of Ghana.The African Gold Coast was divided at various periods between different European powers, including Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, and Britain, before being consolidated under British rule in the mid 19th cent.
