Etymology: < gold adj. + stick n.1
1. The holder of a ceremonial office within the British royal household, whose symbol of office is a gold-headed staff. Cf. silver-stick n. at silver n. and adj. Compounds 2a.The original function of the office was to guard the person of the monarch, and this was carried out by a captain of the regiment of Life Guards (see lifeguard n. 1). The carrying of a gold-headed staff of office was instituted in 1678 (cf. quot. 1679 at sense 2). The position is now held alternately for a month at a time by the Colonels of the two Household Cavalry regiments (the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals); the office-holder on duty is known as Gold Stick in Waiting.
