Etymology: < classical Latin grassant-, grassāns, present participle of grassārī to roam about, lie in wait, (especially of disease, conditions, etc.) to run riot, rage, frequentative formation < gradī to walk (see gradient adj.). Compare grassate v.
Obsolete.
Of something or someone unwelcome, harmful, etc.: widespread, prevalent, endemic; flourishing or spreading unchecked; spec. (of a disease) raging.
