Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish gordita.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish gordita (1st half of 19th cent. or earlier), lit. ‘little fat one’, specific use as noun of feminine of gordito < gordo fat (12th cent.; < classical Latin gurdus blockhead, dolt, of uncertain origin) + -ito (see -et suffix1).
Chiefly U.S.
In Mexican cookery: a thick round cake of fried masa dough, now often served with a filling of meat, cheese, or vegetables.
