Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian ‘abbāsī.
Etymology: < Persian ‘abbāsī < ‘Abbas , the name of Shah Abbas I (reigned 1587–1629) + -i suffix2. Compare Portuguese abaci (1630).Compare also the occasional use in English of a form abas (reflecting the name of the Shah without the Persian suffix), after French †abas (1662 in the passage translated in quot. 1662) and German †Abas (1656, elsewhere in the source underlying the French text):1662 J. Davies tr. A. Olearius Voy. & Trav. Ambassadors 300 They [sc. the Persians] will receive from Foreiners no other money than Rixdollars, or Spanish Ryals, which they immediately convert into Abas's [Fr. en Abas, Ger. in ihre Müntze], and gain a fourth part by the money.

A Persian silver coin (originally weighing approx. 9.33 grams) equivalent in value to two mahmudi (mahmudi n. a) or 200 dinars, first issued by the Safavid Shah Abbas I (reigned 1587–1629) and continuing in use until the 19th cent.; a money of account derived from this.By the end of the 19th cent. the value of the dinar had dropped dramatically and the 200-dinar piece had become a copper coin: see quot. 1902.
