Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: Maori kōhua.
Etymology: Folk-etymological alteration of Maori kōhua kohua n. after go v. and ashore adv.2With the α. forms, compare onshore adv. The association with ashore adv.2 was perhaps in part suggested by a regional pronunciation of h as /ʃ/ in Maori (compare quot. 1905 at taihoa int.). For representation of Maori k by English g , compare e.g. gorau , variant of koura n.; goai , variant of kowhai n.; and the β. forms at kuri n.
New Zealand. Now chiefly historical.
A three-legged iron pot, often with two lugs by which it could be suspended, used as a boiler or for cooking; = kohua n. 2.
