单词 abbatie
释义

abbatien.

Forms:

α. early Middle English abboddie.

β. late Middle English abbathy, late Middle English abbathye, late Middle English–1600s abbathie, 1500s–1600s abathie, 1500s–1800s abbatie, 1600s abbaty.

Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French abbathie ; Latin abbatia ; abbot n., -y suffix3.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman abbathie (1386 or earlier) and its etymon post-classical Latin abbatia, abbathia, abbadia abbey n. In α. forms either altered after abbot n. (compare α. forms at that entry) or showing a formation < abbot n. + -y suffix3, after the Anglo-Norman or post-classical Latin word. Compare abbey n. and foreign-language forms cited at that entry. Compare earlier abbotric n. and later abbacy n.With the α. forms compare the following earlier use as a place name, Abbedi in Bramton, Lehabedi, Abedi (all 13th cent.; now Abdy, West Yorkshire), probably designating land owned by one of two local monasteries (Monk Bretton and Roche), although it is unclear whether this name shows the English word or an otherwise unrecorded Anglo-Norman variant of abbathie: see further A. H. Smith Place names W. Riding Yorks. I. (1961) 107.
Obsolete.
The benefice, jurisdiction, or office of an abbot or abbess. Also: an abbey. Cf. abbacy n. 1.
