The edible seed of a tropical leguminous plant, Vigna subterranea, which ripens in pods underground and is either roasted or boiled. Also: the plant itself. Occasionally with plural agreement. Also called Bambara groundnut.The plant is native to West Africa but was brought to South America as a result of the slave trade and is now widely cultivated across sub-Saharan Africa as a food crop.
