单词 gobbin
释义

gobbinn.1

Brit. /ˈɡɒbɪn/, U.S. /ˈɡɑbən/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: gob n.2; gob n.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) < gob n.2 (compare the allusion to greediness in quot. ?1746) + a suffix seen also in pet forms of forenames, as e.g. Dobbin (see dobbin n.), Robin (see robin n.1), etc., or perhaps (ii) < gob n.1 + the same suffix (compare gubbins n. 2, in a similar sense but with different regional distribution).
English regional (chiefly north-western).
An unintelligent or uneducated person; a fool, an idiot.
