Etymology: < the name of the Manufacture des Gobelins, a state-owned tapestry factory in Paris. Compare French Gobelin kind of tapestry (1873).Gobelin was originally the surname of a family of dyers, who owned the premises in which a Flemish tapestry workshop was established c1601, with royal patronage; the business was subsequently purchased by the crown in 1662 to become part of a centralized system of furniture manufacture.
