Etymology: < (i) scientific Latin Gobius, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 262), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin gōbius, cōbius (also gōbiō , cōbiō ), small fish of the gudgeon kind < ancient Greek κωβιός , some small fish, (especially) gudgeon, of unknown origin, probably a loanword from a Mediterranean language. Compare Old Occitan gobi (1433), Spanish gobio (1555), and the Romance words cited at gudgeon n.¹

Any of numerous small fishes constituting the perciform family Gobiidae, having the pelvic fins fused to form a disc-like ventral sucker that is used for adhering to rocks.
