Etymology: Probably originally a variant of goombay n. (compare sense 2 at that entry), now usually distinguished in form in the senses below.It has alternatively been suggested that this is < a word for ‘cow’ in a Bantu language (compare Kongo ngombe, Kimbundu ngombe cow); compare the use of cow bells and cattle costumes in these festivals.
