Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: god n., have v., mercy n.
Etymology: < god n. + the present subjunctive of have v. (compare forms at have v.) + mercy n. (compare mercy n. 3 and mercy n. 6), used in the sense ‘God reward you’, and hence as an expression of thanks. Compare earlier mercy int. 2 and gramercy int.
