Etymology: < god n. + man n.1, originally after post-classical Latin Deus-homo (from a1109 in British sources); compare also Hellenistic Greek θεάνθρωπος Theanthropos n., Byzantine Greek θέανδρος (see theandric adj.). With sense 1 compare German Gottmensch (1522 in Luther), French Homme-Dieu (1562 or earlier). With sense 2 compare God's man n. at god n. and int.
