单词 goddam
释义

Goddamn.2

Brit. /ˈɡɒdam/, U.S. /ˈɡɑˌdæm/
Forms: 1800s– Goddam, 1800s– Goddem.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French goddam.
Etymology: < French goddam (1767) < English God damn , Goddam (see god n. and int. Phrases 1c(a)(iii); compare God damn me n. 2), reflecting identification of the exclamation as characteristic of the English (compare quot. 1869 at goddam n.1).Compare Middle French godon , pejorative term for an Englishman (14th cent.), which is apparently etymologically unrelated (although of uncertain origin). The form Goddem is probably intended to reflect a French pronunciation.
Now archaic or historical.
Originally among French speakers: an Englishman.
