Etymology: < Godzilla, the name of a very large dinosaur-like monster from the 1956 U.S. film Godzilla, King of the Monsters, alteration of Gojira , the name of the monster in Inoshiro Honda's 1954 Japanese film Gojira, from which the U.S. version was adapted (blend of Japanese gorira gorilla (1867; apparently < English gorilla n.) and kujira whale (8th cent.)), with remodelling after -illa in gorilla n.In the English form of the name, the spelling dz is initially used to represent a single phoneme, apparently acknowledging that Japanese j in kujira goes back to an earlier affricate. Subsequently, the English name was redivided, separating d and z (perhaps partly by association with god n.); compare -zilla comb. form. The name of the monster was allegedly adopted from the nickname of a burly filmset employee.
