Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French goélette.
Etymology: < French goélette schooner (1740, in the 18th cent. also as goulette ), tern (1767 as goislette ), probably alteration (with suffix substitution: see -ette -et suffix1) of goéland seabird, gull < Breton goelan , gwelan (now gouelan ) gull n.1 Compare Occitan goulette, Spanish goleta (1748), Italian goletta (1793).
1. A light schooner-rigged sailing boat used chiefly in North America, typically broad-beamed with two masts. Cf. gulet n. Now historical and rare.

2. Canadian. A type of boat, originally a small schooner (cf. sense 1), in later use a flat-bottomed motor-driven vessel, used for carrying freight on the St Lawrence River in Quebec. Now chiefly historical.
