Etymology: Apparently < German regional (Low German: western) Götte, Görte, variants (with metathesis) of Grütte, denoting various kinds of gruel, porridge, and (by extension) other kinds of ground or mashed food (Middle Low German görte , grütte : see grit n.²). Compare German Grützwurst large sausage made of ground meat and grain, lit. ‘gruel sausage’ (17th cent. or earlier).
