Etymology: < grass n.1 + land n.1Compare Old Frisian gerslond (West Frisian gerslân), Middle Dutch garslant, gorslant, grāslant (Dutch grasland), Middle Low German graslant ( > German Grasland (17th cent.)), Swedish gräsland (16th cent.). Earlier currency is implied by the surname Nicolao de la Garslonde (1296, Sussex). Compare also post-classical Latin graslonda (perhaps) land to be ploughed by the holder of grazing rights (1234 as garslonda).
