Forms: Also 1600s graives, 1800s dialect groves.
Etymology: apparently originally a term of the whale fisheries; < Low German greven, plural (whence Swedish dialect grevar, Danish grever), corresponding to Old High German griubo, griobo (Middle High German, German griebe), which agrees in form with Old English gréoua (= *gréofa) ‘olla’.
With plural agreement. The fibrous matter or skin found in animal fat, which forms a sediment on melting and is pressed into cakes to serve as meat for dogs or hogs, fish-bait, etc.; the refuse of tallow; cracklings.
