Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative (compare -le suffix 3); compare crackle v.Perhaps compare French grésiller to crackle (1832; late 14th cent. in Middle French in the sense ‘to burn (something)’).
Scottish. Now rare.

a. intransitive. To make a harsh noise, esp. repeatedly; to creak, rattle; (in modern use) to crackle. Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records the sense ‘to crackle’ as still in use in Wigtownshire in 1955, but marks it as obsolescent.
