Etymology: < Afrikaans gramadoelas, gamadoelas (also gramadoelies) remote rural region (often with derogatory implications) (1927 or earlier), of uncertain origin.In 1927, Afrikaans gramadoelas appears in a list of words of Bantu origin, and it is often suggested that it is < Zulu amaduli ( < ama- plural class prefix + -duli hill; singular iduli), with addition of Afrikaans -as, variant of the plural ending -s; however, this suggestion leaves the initial gr- (or g-) unexplained.
