Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin gravisparsisonus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin gravisparsisonus, adjective ( J. D. Rhys Cambrobrytannicae Cymbraecaeve linquae institutiones et rudimenta (1592) 143) < classical Latin gravis grave adj.1 + post-classical Latin sparsisonus , designating a particular kind of syllable (see alienisparsison n.), after Welsh tromleddf , adjective (a1575; < trom , trwm heavy (Old Welsh -trum ) + lleddf particular kind of syllable: see alienisparsison n.).
Obsolete. rare.
In Welsh prosody: a syllable terminating with r directly followed by an n, s, or a stop. Cf. alienisparsison n., fortisparsison n.

1856 J. Williams tr. Anc. Gram. Edeyrn §207 A syllable which has its beginning strange, and ends with a fortisparsison or gravisparsison [W. yn dromleddf], as siapr, siars, is called alienisparsison, (dieithrleddf).
