Etymology: < Italian abbozzo (1604) < abbozzare to make a preliminary sketch or outline of a literary or artistic work (1553) < a- ad- prefix + bozza first draft of a literary or artistic work (1550; 1511 as boza in this sense), extended sense of bozza roughly worked stone, lump (see boss n.1, botch n.1). Compare later bozzetto n.
