a. A freshwater salmonid fish of northern Europe, Thymallus thymallus, which has a silvery-grey body with a distinctive long and high dorsal fin. In later use also (frequently with distinguishing word): any of various other fishes of the genus Thymallus, found widely in the northern Holarctic.Arctic, Michigan grayling: see the first element.
