Etymology: < great adj. + bear n.1, after classical Latin Ursa Maior (see Ursa Major at Ursa n. 2). Compare Greater Bear at greater adj. 4b and earlier More Bear (see quot. a1398 and compare more adj. 1a), and also Little Bear n., bear n.1 4.Compare Middle French, French Grande Ourse (1562), Spanish Osa Mayor (1490 or earlier), Italian Orsa Maggiore (a1530), Dutch †Grootere Beerin (1794, lit. ‘Greater She-Bear’; now Groote Beer , masculine), all feminine, reflecting the gender of classical Latin ursa (feminine) bear, she-bear (Ursa n.).
