Etymology: < green adj. + pepper n.
(a) Originally: the immature green fruit of a plant of the genus Piper, esp. P. nigrum; a hot pungent spice derived from the prepared fruits (peppercorns) of any of these, or a similar plant with pungent fruit or seeds; the plant itself (cf. pepper n. 1, 2); (b) (now more usually) the fruit of a capsicum pepper, esp. the green, mild-flavoured, bell-shaped fruit of varieties of the sweet pepper (the Capsicum annuum Grossum group; cf. pepper n. 3).In early use it is not always possible to identify whether the referent is Capsicum or Piper.
