Etymology: < Old French gromet, groumet, servant, valet, shop-boy, wine-merchant's assistant (see gourmet n.) = Spanish grumete ship's-boy. In Anglo-Latin documents down to the 16th cent. the word grometus , a latinization of Anglo-Norman gromet , is frequently used in the sense of groom n.¹ Whether there is any etymological connection between French gromet and English groom is at present uncertain.
