Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse grúfa.
Etymology: < Old Norse grúfa, in phrase á grúfu (in sense 1) = Swedish dialect å gruve ; the occurrence of f instead of the normal v is unexplained. Compare groveling n.
Obsolete exc. Scottish.
