Brit. /ˈɡʌpi/, U.S. /ˈɡəpi/
Etymology: < the name of R. J. Lechmere Guppy (1836–1916), British-born naturalist of Trinidad, who sent the first recorded specimen to the British Museum, used as the specific epithet in Gerardinus guppyi (A. Günther Catal. Fishes Brit. Mus. (1866) VI. 353), the name used when the fish was first described.
A small fish, Lebistes reticulatus, originally from the West Indies, well suited for the aquarium. Cf. million n. 3.
