The common grosbeak is the hawfinch ( Coccothraustes vulgaris). Other species are indicated by a defining word prefixed, as green grosbeak n. = greenfinch n. 1a; pine g., Pinicola enucleator; cardinal g. (see cardinal n. Compounds 2b); grenadier g.
