1842 A. Rich in W. Smith Dict. Gr. & Roman Antiq. 141/2 Oil..was dropped upon it from a small vessel called guttus, which had a narrow neck, so as to discharge its contents drop by drop, from whence the name is taken.
1883 J. W. Mollett Illustr. Dict. Art & Archæol. 163 Guttus,..a vessel with a very narrow neck and mouth, by means of which liquids could be poured out drop by drop; whence its name.
