Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French applicable; Latin applicabilis.
Etymology: < Middle French applicable (French applicable ), capable of being applied or put into practice (1282 in Old French), which illustrates something (c1366) and its etymon post-classical Latin applicabilis capable of being applied, readily applied (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin applicāre apply v. + -bilis -ble suffix. Compare Italian applicabile (1585). Compare earlier appliable adj. N.E.D. (1885) records only the pronunciation with stress on the first syllable. The pronunciation with stress on the second syllable has been noted in British English from at least the late 19th cent., and has gradually gained in currency.
