Etymology: A variant of able adj., adv., and n. (formerly hable , abil , etc.), conformed in 16–17th cent. to modern French habile or Latin habilis , and, in modern use, (sense 4) to some extent differentiated: see able adj.
1. Fitted, suited; fit, suitable; competent (to do something); = able adj. 2. Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
