Etymology: Alteration (after kercher n.) of handkerchief n.This form was common in literary use before the 18th cent., and persisted in frequent spoken use even after handkerchief n. had come to be usual in written use. Compare:1867 J. R. Lowell Biglow Papers 2nd Ser. (new ed.) Introd. p. xviii Voltaire tells his countrymen that handkerchief was pronounced hankercher... This enormity the Yankee still persists in.
